Pack RH% + Container = Effect

There is no perfect humidity level. Different levels serve different purposes, and the right one depends entirely on what effect you are trying to achieve.

Three Container Types

Every container behaves differently.

Plastic

Tupperdors, Pelican cases, sealed jars

Minimal moisture loss. The seal keeps almost everything in, so the pack delivers close to its rated RH. The most predictable environment. Also used for hygrometer calibration with the 75% pack.

Holds within 1% of pack

Semi-Airtight

Travel humidors, acrylic jars, metal cases

Some air exchange through imperfect seals. Expect a slight drop below the pack's rated RH. More stable than wood, less stable than plastic.

Drops RH 1-2%

Wood Humidor

Cedar, walnut, cabinet humidors

Spanish cedar absorbs moisture. The wood takes 2-4% RH from the air inside, pulling the effective humidity below the pack's rating. This is why wood humidors need higher-rated packs. Seasoning your humidor first creates a moisture barrier in the wood so it retains humidity more consistently over time.

What humidity pack for a wood humidor?
Spanish cedar absorbs about 2–4% RH, so a wood humidor reads below the pack rating. For everyday maintenance in wood, use a Valet 72% pack. It lands around 69–70% RH inside the humidor. For aging in wood, use 69%. It lands around 65–67% RH. Do not use 65% in wood. That combination reads dry and is not recommended. 75% is for dry climates and drafty humidors. Season a new or bone-dry wood humidor first with the 84% pack (about 14 days, around 78–80% RH in wood), then switch to 72% or 69%. Size by capacity: one 60g pack per 25 cigars the humidor can hold, not how many cigars are in it. Storage packs last 3–6 months. Replace when the pack is hard with no give.
What humidity pack for a tupperdor?
A tupperdor is plastic, so it holds near the pack’s rated RH. Wood is different: cedar absorbs about 2–4% RH. For everyday tupperdor maintenance, use a Valet 69% pack and expect about 69–71% RH. For long-term aging in a tupperdor, use 65% and expect about 65–67% RH. Do not use the 84% seasoning pack in a tupperdor. 72% is the wood maintenance pack and is not recommended in plastic. Travel humidors drop about 1–2% below the rating. Size by volume, not fill: one 60g pack per 25 cigars of capacity. 8g packs are for travel cases and tubes. Storage packs last 3–6 months. Replace when hard with no give. No activation. Place the pack in as-is.
How do I season a humidor with 84%?
Use the Valet 84% pack only to season a wood humidor. It is not a storage pack, and it must not be used in a tupperdor. In wood it lands around 78–80% RH. Leave it in for about 14 days, then remove it. After seasoning, switch to a storage pack: 72% for wood maintenance (about 69–70% RH) or 69% for wood aging (about 65–67% RH). Size the 84% pack the same way as any other 60g pack: one pack per 25 cigars of humidor capacity, by volume not fill. No activation. Take it out of the outer packaging and place it in the empty, closed humidor. Do not tear it open or soak it. Do not leave 84% in after seasoning is done.
How many humidity packs do I need?
Count packs by humidor capacity, not by how many cigars are inside. One Valet 60g pack covers 25 cigars of volume. A 50-cigar humidor needs two 60g packs even if it is half full. A 25-cigar desktop or tupperdor needs one. A 100-cigar cabinet needs four. 8g packs are for travel cases and tubes, not a way to undersize a desktop. Using the right count helps the pack last the typical 3–6 months. Replace any pack that is hard with no give. The 84% seasoning pack uses the same capacity rule while it is in the humidor, then comes out after about 14 days. Match RH to the container: 69% for tupperdor maintenance or wood aging, 72% for wood maintenance, 65% for tupperdor aging, 75% for dry or drafty wood. Do not use 84% in a tupperdor.
